As we approach the end of the year, I thought it would be an opportune time to reflect on all we have achieved together over the past year. 2024 was an exciting year for OPMA as we continued to build on our mission of connecting people and information from field to plate. We raised our profile by strengthening relationships with industry advocates, consumers, the media, and government officials.
Since January, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting member sites, discussing current issues with you, and gaining a deeper appreciation for this amazing sector. I’ve been particularly struck by the passion that drives you, whether it’s through advancing sustainable practices or adopting cutting-edge technologies. From farms to distribution hubs, each visit has underscored the incredible work you’re doing—and I couldn’t be prouder to represent such a dynamic industry.
- Our partnership with Numerator expanded our research capabilities, providing members with quarterly reports on consumer shopping habits in Ontario’s fresh fruit and vegetable sector.
- The OPMA golf tournament and gala were tremendous successes.
- Our events and networks have brought the industry together in meaningful ways. From the Women’s Produce Network (WPN) to the Young Professionals Network (YPN), we’ve seen incredible energy, collaboration, and growth in these groups. These networks and events not only foster connections but also spark new ideas and initiatives that strengthen our industry.
- On the consumer education front, our Produce Made Simple program continues to be a beacon for outreach and engagement. This year, we achieved over 25 million media impressions, a testament to the power of this platform. Thanks to a grant from OMAFA, we expanded our content library, launched a rebranded website, and featured out-of-home ads on the TTC and Go Trains! We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to promote Ontario grown and sourced fresh produce.
- In March, we’ll proudly distribute over 1,200 hampers of fresh produce to families in need across Ontario. This program, shifted from December to better meet community needs, reflects the generosity and commitment of our members. Your contributions make a real difference, and I thank you for your unwavering support.
- The OPMA also continues to support Student Nutrition Ontario and the Toronto Foundation for Student Success. Through these partnerships, we help bring fresh produce into schools across the province and teach essential cooking skills to kids in at-risk areas. These programs are shaping healthier futures, and I’m proud of the role we play in them.
As we look ahead to 2025, I wanted to let you know that there will be a membership fee increase. The membership fees will be rising by one hundred dollars to $600 a year. The membership fees have not been increased in over a decade and with rising costs and increased services, the Board made the decision to increase the fees. The increase in fees will assist us in meeting rising costs associated with events (AV costs and food and beverage costs) and will support our increased programming and member services. Over the past couple of years, we have added many membership benefits including: the Young Professionals Network and the Women’s Produce Network and associated events; we have invested in Produce Made Simple (including a new website) and related consumer marketing; and we have continued to work to raise the profile of produce in Ontario.
As an OPMA member, you belong to a community of produce professionals inspired to connect and grow, with access to knowledge, resources, and support to grow your business. Our 2025 Sponsorship package has been released and I invite you to review the opportunities available at https://theopma.ca/sponsoring/.
It has been my absolute pleasure to serve as your President this year. I’m inspired daily by the dedication and innovation I see from our members. Together, we’ve accomplished so much. Let’s celebrate our successes and look ahead to an even brighter future for Ontario’s produce industry—one built on innovation, collaboration, and shared passion.
I want to take a moment to recognize the OPMA staff: Dee, Sandra, and Mary. Their tireless efforts—from coordinating events to fostering member connections—are the backbone of our success. It’s truly a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated team.
Thank you also to our Board and Committee volunteers. In the produce industry, we’re fortunate to have an abundance of passionate individuals who step up to make a difference. Your dedication is invaluable, and I encourage anyone interested in volunteering to connect with us—we’d love to have you on board!
I look forward to continuing to work with you over the next year and hope to see many of you at our annual events. I’d also welcome the opportunity to visit your operations and learn more about what you and your teams are working on.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with questions or concerns. Thank you for your ongoing support – we couldn’t do what we do without you!
Happy Holidays,
Rebecca
